Using Emojis

Symbols, icons, and images have always been part of communication, dating back to prehistoric times when people used cave drawings. Today, one of the common iterations used is the emojis. People use emojis to convey different tones, humor, personality, and other things. In addition, emojis are used to make a conversation over the phone more fun, as writing using only words would seem a bit bland or too formal. However, there are thousands of emojis, and they keep increasing, all used to convey different messages, including slang. This is where a challenge occurs because young people come up with new words to express themselves, and the older generations or people from different social circles are usually not in the loop.

An example is the use of the word clown to refer to when someone makes a fool of themselves. As such, when texting about an embarrassing situation, one will use a clown emoji to explain what happened. Similarly, I remember using the clown emoji when we were talking in a family group chat about how I had made a fool of myself earlier while we were at the mall. Later in the evening, my dad came home looking confused and asked me, “What do you mean you were a clown? How did that happen?” We all looked at him, not knowing what he was talking about, and he said, “You said in the group chat that you were a clown,” he explained further while scrolling through the phone to show us what he was talking about. As soon as we saw the message, we all burst out laughing because we realized that he had taken the meaning literally. Shortly afterward, we explained to him what the emoji and the word clown meant, and now clown is one of my dad’s favorite words and emoji.
