Ability to Listen

Having functional experts equipped with hard skills to get the job done is fundamental for an organization to succeed. However, a machine can also offer hard skills, making employees easily replaceable. Nonetheless, soft skills are what make individuals worthy in companies. Notably, soft skills must complement hard skills, thus making most employers look for employees with soft skills. One of the most important soft skills is listening. The ability to listen will determine how successful an employee will be, which then translates into the company’s success.

The ability to listen equips one with skills like effective communication, emotional intelligence, the ability to work well with others, coaching coworkers, taking the initiative, and being dependable and getting the job done. The ability to listen enables one to be present in the conversation and understand what a person is trying to say and what they are saying. This skill is crucial when dealing with customers with functional and emotional needs. Without the ability to listen, these customer needs will not be met, making customers feel unappreciated and cheated, resulting in customer loss and losses to the company. In addition, the environment that companies exist in today is quick and ever-changing, which requires individuals in companies to be agile learners. Accordingly, this requires the ability to listen, understand, and make solid choices when constantly being fed with random bits of information.

From a personal view, finding new hires with the ability to listen is difficult. This is especially because we are in the age of digital overstimulation. A larger percentage of individuals, especially the young generation, spend too much time staring at screens. The effects of this are decreased levels of patience, decreased ability to focus, reduced levels of empathy, and deteriorating conversational skills. All these have a negative effect on the ability to listen.
